Chapter 3: Granny time travels to slavery

Granny breathed in the warm and humid Louisiana air. It smelled clean and full of life. The air anywhere in the rural United States in 1858 was clean, free of the toxic pollutants that would build up over the course of the next century and a half. She knew some of the major industrial cities, filled with coal-powered machinery, would be different.

But for now, she was just walking the Louisiana road, and her sense of purpose made her walk tall and look straight ahead. The road itself was dirt of course, a bit moist, but not muddy today. It wasn’t hurricane season just yet. Granny’s boot-clad feet made soft indents into the rich soil. Tall, thick, and willowy trees grew up from the rich soil on either side of the road, forming a curtain around the elderly black woman’s path. Birds chirped and cawed from all-around. Bullfrogs and crickets started up their chorus as late afternoon began to turn to early evening. It wasn’t much farther, Granny knew, she would be to her destination before dark.

Scorpion QueenThe trees thinned and then faded away as she reached the large clearing of property that formed the plantation where Granny’s slave family worked for the profit of their white owners. Granny could see the lights from the windows of the great and luxurious plantation house, with its white columns. Rice, cotton, and tobacco fields stretched far around the area. Granny looked around cautiously: she needed desperately to avoid detection by any overseers, guards, or even just wandering normal white folk. Southern American society at this time embraced racial slavery as the absolute law of the land, almost like a religion. Even if most white Southerners didn’t own slaves, they sure as hell didn’t want blacks living free, upsetting the “natural” order of things. But it seemed quiet on the plantation tonight. No sound but the crickets, and the bullfrogs back behind her.

Witch - ColorThe tall wet grass, and the slave cabins that Granny approached from the dirt plantation path, looked grayish-blue through the advancing twilight. Granny’s mobile phone had a flashlight app, but she wanted to avoid using such modern technology as much as possible, even if she thought no one would be around to see it. You could never be too careful with time travel. Well, Granny was messing with the time stream, she thought, but it was for a damn good reason! Slavery, and the Civil War fought over it, had had horrible consequences for all Americans. It had been particularly cruel to Granny’s family. And besides, she wouldn’t have to worry too much about messing up the past, because she would be good at blending in anyway. She’d studied from the encyclopedia on her phone how to dress like a slave from this era, and how to talk like one. Besides, she was from the Deep South herself, and African-American dialects from that region had in many ways not changed too much!

The Zodiac Killers

Scorpion QueenChapter 6: The Zodiac Killers

Inside, Salome was rubbing her hands together with malicious glee as the drinks were served to the Witch Council. The immortal Egyptian Queen would win this time, she thought. Her proposal was sure to pass the Council, and soon the Bakers would pay…with their pathetic, upstart lives. The spell-casters that formed the Council were all gathered here around their great table in this dark but ornately decorated hall. Their looks were so pretentious, so condescending towards Salome, the vampire thought.

She remembered last week, when they had vetoed her plan to use the power of a glamour spell to infiltrate Zodiac assassins into the Bakers’ midst, and then strike when they least suspected it.

“Outrageous,” someone had declared, “Why should we ever vote for that?”

They hadn’t even given her time for a complete explanation. But now, the drinks were being poured by servants into the goblets at each of their places, and they would soon be changing their minds…Granny’s potions, if used properly, could be very persuasive.

Drake transitions from slave to King

image007Chapter 5: Drake transitions from slave to King

The mustached man nodded to his companions, who held their machetes and torches high as they charged at the two black men. Drake dodged the first swipe, as did Ram. Drake remained cool, calm and collected as he maneuvered around the whirling blade and flame of the yelling young men in front of him. Three were attacking him, and an equal number attacked Ram. Drake knew he could end this fight fast if he could get in close with his fangs, but the men had longer reach with their weapons, and they protected each other well.

Drake saw an opening when one his attackers swung wildly overhand and had to stumble clumsily forward and steady himself. Drake showed his fangs and dove at the man’s neck, but felt an impact and a sharp pain in his shoulder as a machete came down there.

“Ha!” yelled the man.

Drake could feel hot blood running down his chest, but it didn’t slow him as he tripped the man who struck him with a low sweeping kick. He heard Ram scream in pain as his arm was badly burned by one of the torches, which Ram knocked aside, and it fell to the grass and started a fire on the ground. Two of the men took this like a signal to throw their own torches into the slave’s huts, setting them ablaze. Men, women, and children screamed from inside.

A time traveller gives the slaves hope for freedom

Black History TimelineChapter 4: Granny conjures powerful magic to change slavery

The two most prominent slaves that Granny met were named Drake and Big Daddy Ram. Both were dark, large men, tall with wide shoulders. Ram was a bit bigger, and had a beard. Drake lacked any facial hair, and had sharper eyes. He was the more conniving and possibly cruel of the two, though Ram was sure as hell no push over. They both listened thoughtfully to Granny’s talk over dinner, thinking on each and every word she said. Their acceptance of her stories of the future with a black president persuaded the other slaves almost as much as the photographic evidence.

Then, Granny got to the part about her plan for Drake, and the two large men really started to listen. They leaned in close as Granny spoke. Drake of course, being a vampire, had the special moonlight ring and cane from Granny, allowing him to be outside in direct sunlight. He held a powerful presence over the others, who thought him blessed or cursed, or at least in some way divinely chosen for a great purpose. Granny confirmed such thinking when she explained the basics of her plan for Drake and for her people:

“You, Drake. Yes, I know your name well. You will play the most important part in things to come, and I say that boldly now for everyone to hear!”
