Leanna looks up at the picture of her aunties up on the wall. Two sets of triplets in the same family. What are the odds? Leanna was named for the one on the right. They have the same wavy hair and very similar bone structure. In fact, the similarities between each girl and her namesake were uncanny.
Leanna laced up her shoes as she waited for Dolf. He’s the one who suggested the dance competition. He was judging. If he hadn’t suggested it, she might not have done it. But the competition was a chance for her to shine and get his attention. She had even managed to get him to give her a ride. Her sisters Etienne and Fatiene were already on their way. They had boys of their own they were hoping to see there.
Etienne had a thing for Costello who was a dancer in Vaudeville shows when he was younger—or so he said. Leanna wondered if that wasn’t just a story he told Etienne to charm her.
Fatiene liked handsome Johnny B, who was a backup singer in a band—or so Fatiene told them.
Leanna could hear her father, Big Daddy, clomping around upstairs. He told them all the times that they were too much like his boy-crazy sisters. They had all been head over heels, fawning over mysterious boys that nobody ever met. Her father said that for a while he thought they had invented these boyfriends like small children invent imaginary friends. Then he thought that maybe there was one guy who was playing all of his sisters and that is why no one ever met him. You couldn’t pretend to be three different people all at the same time. His sisters had decided to prove themselves by inviting their boyfriends to a dance competition to see them move. Back then everybody was doing the twist. But this year, Leanna and her sisters were going to blow everyone away with the jive.
