Debbie1Dancer Tribute 3/30/12: Debbie Allen (Houston, TX original Tweet 10/10/11

I have a saying that describes my performing motto:  JUST DO WHAT DEBBIE DOES!!!

You can’t go wrong if you follow the path of Debbie Allen!

Dancer
Choreographer
Singer
Broadway Star
Actress
Director
Debbie2Producer
Dance Studio Director
Emmy Winner
Academy Awards Choreographer

What can’t Debbie do?

There is no performing road block that Debbie can’t tackle with her magnificent talent, determination and strength.

Debbie3She opened so many doors of dance, that NO ONE, I mean NO ONE will be able to conquer the Dance World like Debbie did.  In fact, like Katherine Dunham before her, Debbie also integrated and KICKED DOWN the glass ceiling when it came to directing and producing.

If I could come back reincarnated as any performer, it would be Debbie Allen.

There are not many performers that I admire that have so many works that I admire.  I loved her performances in Broadway shows like Purlie, West Side Story and Sweet Charity.  I loved her acting in TV shows like FAMEAll of Us, The Cosby Show, A Different World, Quantum Leap, In The House and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE!  And I love it when I see Debbie’s name as a director for shows like Girlfriends, Hellcats and The Parkers!

Debbie4Debbie has so many incredible performances that it would be hard to pinpoint my favorite, but I can try to narrow it down to my TOP 3:

  • 1.  Choreographer for 1983 65th Oscar Awards Live to “A Whole New World” from the movie Aladdin.  The Belly Twins (Veena & Neena) and Atlantis did a great job of performing in that telecast.
  • 2.  The Debbie Allen special.  I have a copy of this somewhere on a VHS, but I remember Debbie Allen “Belly Dancing” in a yellow costume.
  • 3.  Debbie Allen as Joanna Chapman in Quantum Leap episode of  “Private Dancer.”  http://www.tv.com/shows/quantum-leap/private-dancer-60523/

I can sing my praise of Debbie Allen all day and all night, but let me close by saying:  DO WHAT DEBBIE DOES and you will never go wrong in Dance!  Debbie thank you for inspiring me and so many other dancers, you are a NATIONAL DANCE TREASURE!

Singer/Dancer Tribute 2/12/12: Irene Cara (Bronx, NY). What is your favorite scene in the movie Sparkle or song by Irene Cara?

Irene7Singer/Dancer Tribute 2/12/12: Irene Cara (Bronx, NY)

First of all, RIP Whitney Houston.  Sad smile  My prayers are for Bobbi Kristina, Cissy Houston & Dionne Warwick, Bobby Brown and all of Whitney’s family.

I was planning to do a tribute to Irene Cara.  What a co-incidence, both Irene and Whitney acted in two different versions of the movie Sparkle.

I loved the original movie version of Sparkle and was first in line to see it when it came out in 1976, a personal favorite year for me!  I love all things-Supremes and the movie was a bit similar to DreamGirls which is similar to the Supremes.  So I loved everything, the songs, the costumes, the dancing, the story.  In fact, Sparkle is my all-time favorite, favorite best movie!!!

Of course I had to get the movie soundtrack LP when it came out.  But I was disappointed that the actors in the movie did not sing the songs on the soundtrack.  I love Aretha Franklin, but it should have been Irene Cara, Lonette McKee and Dwan Smith singing the songs on the soundtrack.  That soundtrack was magical and some of Curtis Mayfield’s best work.  I had a raggedy copy of the movie on video tape, then when it was finally released on DVD I had to get that copy too.

Then Irene had to go out and participate in some my other favorite movies like

  • Fame, Actress, Dancer and Vocalist on Movie Theme Song
  • FlashDance, Vocalist and Co-Writer of Movie Theme Song

I am so looking forward to seeing the remake of Sparkle when it is released on August 17, 2012.  I know it will be one of my favorite movies that Whitney Houston made, like Waiting to Exhale (1995) and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997).   Here is Irene Cara, enjoy!

Mesmera4Belly Dancer Tribute 1/27/12: Mesmera (Los Angeles, CA) original Tweet 9/25/11, What is your favorite dance by Mesmera?

I LOVE Mesmera!  Belly Dance Star of Stage, Screen, Movies & Beyond!

One of the most creative performers in the world!  Always exciting, always evolving, always MESMERISING!

I remember watching her on a long time ago on FAME as the belly dancer doing the bellygram, that was back in 1982.  I also loved watching her on Mama’s Family belly dancing in an episode from 1990.  It is so cool that Mesmera was able to belly dance on so many of my other favorite shows including Hill Street Blues, Gimme a Break, etc.  She really brought Belly Dance to the masses.

It was an honor to meet her in person when I sponsored her in a workshop in my hometown, along with Live Music provided by Raja and John Bilezikjian.  I still have her Video tape, Dance of the Serpent, it is one of my all-time favorite belly dance videos!

The one thing I LOVE most about Mesmera is that she told me who made one of her belly dance capes.  And that was so sweet and honest because I have met so many dancers who are reluctant to share any, information that might give you an edge.  Not Mesmera, she is totally sweet, down to earth and can dance like nobody’s business.
