Insecurity + Envy = Evil

Naomi CampbellHey cousin! Have not seen you in a few years, and I heard you were in a car accident. You seemed to have picked up more than a few pounds!

“TheMostBeautifulGirlintheWorld” continues. I just returned from my church #The666Beast. They sent me here to spy on you. Today’s sermon was about acceptance and unconditional love.

Do you practice what they preach in your church, or does it go in one ear and out the other, asked Cousin?

Beautiful Girl replies, I heard a rumor that you are still unattractive. And everyone hates fat, ugly people. Even though you have not changed on the inside, the minute you gained weight, I hated you.Alien Beauty

You better get pretty soon, or we will report you to the Ugly Police and ship your ass to Ugly Town!

I am not nearly as attractive as classic beauties like Lena Horne, Naomi Campbell or Diana Ross, nor have I won any national pageants like you did.

Because you won a pageant 30 years ago, you have to stay fit and attractive for the rest of your life!

Remember when your brother Lance got cancer? If he had the surgery early on, that would have left an ugly scar. So I snitched on him to the Ugly Police and they told him to let the cancer spread, so he could die with no body scars,Diana Ross instead of stopping the cancer from spreading. God forbid his body does not look like Isaiah — it’s better to die.

My BeastPastor said he does care if you age 20 years or live to be 80, you have to look the same way forever. If not, we will turn against you.

Lena HorneOur church motto is:

  • Stay pretty
  • Stay slim
  • Die slowly if anything threatens your looks

I can’t stand to look at you, you have aged 20 years!

I’m calling the Ugly Police right now!

Happy Birthday Michael Jackson; Dancing Queens of Outer Space and OZ!

Fivver Oz PaintingChapter 8 Dancing Queens of Outer Space
August 1940; Wichita, KS

Another concept better elaborated on by science in the 3000’s, were those of heaven and hell. Heaven and Hell were proven not to be just ideological concepts, but actually a series of planets where spirits were transported after their mortal deaths on earth. It was not uncommon to see planets that were absolute paradise, though only accessible to those who died, living well and who wanted to go to a particular planet. Somehow, through a VITAS 1939 Wizard of Ozerror of security, The Wicked Bitches of the East, South, West and North got through to one of these paradise planets. The Bitches left absolute chaos and destruction in their wake, having set fire to several levels of the VITAS Nexus and having decapitated many vampires older than Christ or Methuselah.

The operation, while devilishly planned and devastating in its nature, had a flaw. Rather than ruin the Paradise of Men Who Like Beer as they had intended, the Bitches came through on the Paradise of Women Who Act Kindly, a mostly male devoid planet indeed. Nevertheless, the Bitches went to work, burning and slicing and sending out flying monkeys alongside other various minions, knowing that even if The Wizthey were somehow defeated, they could come back, and maybe with the Nexus of the VITAS so damaged, would be able to destroy all paradises.

This particular paradise was based on the beloved Gizzard of Woz story, as luck would have it, and each of the Wicked Bitches became uncomfortably aware of what happened to the witch at the very end. They attacked without mercy and without hesitation. Small 1940’s looking towns were burned, with people still inside.  Trees that could talk and sing were cut down without hesitation, their red sap thick and sticky. The Bitches conjured up the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion in wicked parody and marched upon the Bellow Urick Road towards the Sapphire City, and center of the Paradise.

WickedJust when it appeared that all had been lost to the wrath of the bitches, seven people appeared up the road, surprisingly, three of them male dancers sent after the Bitches from VITAS. Judy Garland, Diana Ross, Zooey Deschanel, Idina Menzel, Buddy Ebsen, Jack Haley, and Bert Lahr, all previously associated with Gizzard of Woz works in their own lifetime, now stood to defend what had become their heaven.

The Wicked Bitches, unable to match the Jitterbug the team forced upon them, sent their flying monkeys in a hail to bite and tear the dancers limb from limb.  As it was, with hardly Kathleen Robertson Evil Witch Tin Mana break in step, Zooey clicked her ruby slippered heels three times and disappeared.  The others did the same.  Enraged, the Wicked Bitch of the North flew high above the Bellow Urick Road and scanned the surrounding countryside madly for those who had dared to challenge her.  The three men were far to the north west, beside the city gates, while the women had gone far south, amidst the destruction the Bitches had left in their wake.  And still they did their maddening jitterbug, which made the Bitches feel compelled to flee the planet without delay.  The witches sent their summoned Tin man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion after women, while they went for the men from VITAS.

Performer Tribute 4/20/12: Cher (El Centro, CA) original Tweet 10/11/11. Who inspired you to perform?

Cher1Performer Tribute 4/12/12: Cher (El Centro, CA) original Tweet 10/11/11

Consciously or sub-consciously, a performer or someone inspired you to perform. Think about it?

James Brown and Jackie Wilson inspired Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson inspired Usher, Hanson and a host of other generations of performers

Whitney Houston has inspired a generation of performers

Marilyn Monroe inspired many, many different performersCher2

Cute, little Willow Smith reminds me so much of a young Jada Pinkett or Will Smith

The late, great Dick Clark inspired Ryan Seacrest and many other popular TV & Radio hosts

The list goes on and on. And it makes me wonder who inspired me to dance?

Well, looking back, seems like I was a sucker and magnet for all things Rhinestone, bling, glitter & fringe – so let’s blame that on Tina Turner and Cher.

Cher3Also, I love big, wild Diva Wigs and trying to sing, so let’s blame that on Diana Ross and Cher.

I love dancing and watching performers who dance well in their stage shows, so let’s blame that on Debbie Allen and Cher.

I love costume designers with fabulous costumes and the performers who wear them like Bob Mackie and Cher.

Also I love glamorous, exotic make up so let’s blame that on Elizabeth Taylor and Cher

Cher4Hey, wait – let’s blame everything on Cher!!! The Diva who has it all: bling, wigs, singing, dancing, costumes makeup, etc.

Cher has it all!

I would LOVE to meet Cher in person one day and just look at her Wig Room and Costume Rooms. I’m not sure if she has been in a TV special where they show that, but I would love to see it.

Cher is a hero, from acting to singing to dancing to her wigs, to her costumes to her famous Vegas Shows to her movies! Wow! She has done it all.  And there are not that many performers around who have been able to change and keep up with all of the different music and fashion styles for many decades and generations like Cher, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin.  They have all survived my favorite music era: DISCO and keep up, stay in style and keep it moving and grooving.

Cher5I remember watching the Sony & Cher show back in the day. Little Chastity was so sweet back then. It was great when they showed her. I also loved it when she danced with the Jackson 5. Not many performers can pull that off, but Cher did and looked pretty cool doing it.

I follow Cher on Facebook and Twitter and it was so cool when Chaz was on Dancing with the Stars. It was exciting when they announced that Cher would be coming to support Chaz.

Underneath all that stage makeup, diva costumes, wigs and bling is a real human, a mother to Chaz and a former wife to Sony.

It would so cool for Cher to make a video for DIVA WANNABEs. Or have a Reality show called Cher’s Top Divas. I would certainly audition. Are you listening Cher?Cher8

I know it’s not Cher, but could not resist throwing in this one with Jackson 5 and Vicki Lawrence from The Carol Burnett show.  Who knew Mama from Mama’s Family could boogie dance so good with the J5?

Here is Cher with the J5

Who inspired you to perform?

Entertainer Tribute 4/12/12: RuPaul (San Diego, CA). Who is your most beautiful entertainer?

Rupaul1Entertainer Tribute 4/12/12: RuPaul (San Diego, CA)

NEWS HEADLINE – 4/11/12 – 4/12/12: ASHLEY JUDD HAS A PUFFY FACE!

I was upset when I read those headlines today.  I agree with Ashley 100% that it is woman-hating!

Men are never dissed for having puffy faces, puffy bellies, gray hair, wrinkles or stretch marks.  Only women.Rupaul2

This is such a narcissistic society that only in America do you see crazy headlines like this.

It is to me a form of bullying as well.  Why are people picking on Ashley and being so critical of her looks?

She is a great actress and I always enjoy her movies.  I don’t watch her movies for beauty, I watch them for her acting talent.  Regardless, that is so shallow and stupid for people to even bring that up.

Rupaul3Which brings up the question: WHO IS YOUR MOST BEAUTIFUL ENTERTAINER?

I have always thought performers like Diana Ross, Cher, Lena Horne, Elizabeth Taylor and including Ashley Judd are both talented and beautiful.

But one performer sticks out in my mind as the most BEAUTIFUL WOMAN.  Guess who?  RUPAUL!!!

Rupaul4That sounds crazy, but Rupaul looks better than most women, even though he is a man in drag.

If I could meet any performer in person and ask for tips on great makeup for entertainers, hair styling tips and fashion sense, it would be Rupaul.

Hell, he looks way better than me!

He works the makeup, wigs and costumes better than most women.

Sure, sometimes he goes overboard and looks too much like a DRAG QUEEN.  But most of the time, he does look like a very beautiful woman.  Puffy cheeks and all.  I am truly envious of RuPaul.  I agree with Rupaul’s statement about wigs and makeup being so important in show business.  I would LOVE to have Rupaul give me a makeover.  Check out his/her shows on Logo TV.

Who is your most beautiful entertainer?

Belly Dancer Tribute 2/18/12: Yassmeen Samra (Los Gatos, CA) original Tweet 10/5/11, What is your favorite recollection of “The Belly Dancer Magazine” or Yassmeen Samra?

Black Belly DancersBelly Dancer Tribute 2/18/12: Yassmeen Samra (Los Gatos, CA) original Tweet 10/5/11

Do you ever think back to when you were a kid and what you wanted to be when you grew up?

Surprisingly (or not), the first thing I wanted to be at age 5 was a dancer.

I am so glad that my mom allowed me to take dances lessons in ballet, tap & jazz.  She also enrolled me in acrobatics, but I was so horrible at acrobatics that I gave up.  I can’t turn a decent somersault or do the splits if my life depended on it.

I love it when I see any “older” person turn a flip, like Diana Ross did in The Wiz, tee hee.  I get a big kick out of it, because it’s something I can’t do.

I had a life-changing event in 1973 and was forced to change my life goal.  My next favorite thing to do was write.  I was an editor on the newspaper and yearbook staffs during high school.  So no more dancing, from now on, Journalism.  My father worked as a photographer for a local newspaper so when I graduated from high school, I saw my future as a journalist at the same newspaper.  I majored in journalism in college, until . . .

Ut-oh, life happened again and a new change happened in 1977-78.  Journalism was out, baby was in, 1977.  Then came Belly dance in 1978.  I taught my little sister Candy everything I learned in my belly dance classes.  One year I was at her dance recital and a little girl (show-off) was dancing to “ I want to be a dancer.”  I cried when I saw that and knew that I wanted to dance.

So dance I did from the late 1970s onward.  I was still in college, but noticed that I kept changing my major to classes that would help me in dance like Costume History, Sewing, Business Administration, etc.  And along the way, I ended up doing more dancing than college, with teaching dance, travelling, performing and directing my dance troupe.

When you are at age 5 and want to be a dancer and then become a teen and pick a more practical vocation, it is so hard to predict that you will end up doing what you wanted to do at age 5.  Who knew?

Yassmeen Samra was a Mentor for me in so many ways.  I am so proud to have had a chance to meet her in person at a dance workshop in Fort Worth, TX sponsored by Carol Shannon featuring Bert Balladine.  I also met Amaya there and saw George Abdo perform Live in person.  Talk about a dream belly dance workshop!  I tried to recreate those types of Dream workshops back when I used to sponsor workshops with great teachers like Bert Balladine, Amaya, Raja Zahr, Lala Hakim, Morocco, Aisha Ali, DeAnn, The Sirocco Band, the Trans Arabian Band and many more.

I used to contact Yassmeen Samra by mail (not email, cell phone or fax back then, LOL) back in the late 1970s and early 1980s because I was a customer of her Belly Dance Bazaar.  She had some great items.  And she mentioned that she had became a Multi-Millionaire.

Yassmeen, you are my personal Hero in dance.  With so many achievements as far as journalism, financial success in dance, personal style in dance and just being a great role model.  I wish you were still around, I don’t know what happened to you, where you are, if you are still dancing, etc.  I wish I still had some of my copies of the Belly Dancer Magazine from the late 1970s.  But a lot can happen from 1980 to 2012.  I have lived in different houses, sometimes my favorite magazines were stored in the basement, some of them got moisture damage and ended up being thrown away.

But, please check with your local libraries to see if they can get copies of them:

Hello,

It looks like the magazine is in storage at New York Public Library.  Were you hoping to find an article or did you need any information about the magazine itself?  I also checked the Los Altos library, but they don’t show the magazine in their catalog.   Let us know if we can help you with more information.

Melinda Mattingly, Reference Librarian

Also, I sent an email today to Lynette Holloway.  She wrote: “From flab to fab: belly dance your way to fitness,” for the August 2007 issue of Ebony Magazine.  Her website is listed below and it has her contact email address in it.  Please contact her and suggest doing an article that includes dancers like Nakish, Yassmeen Samra, Zarifa Aradoon, etc.  Also, the 1st 2 links below pertain to that article.

Again, 6 Degrees of Separation, shows how our belly dance paths are linked as one journey.
