Dancer Tribute 12/30/11: Carmen Miranda (Portugal/Brazil)

Carmen1Dancer Tribute 12/30/11: Carmen Miranda (Portugal/Brazil).  My favorite dance of this entire season  Dancing with the Stars, was the Samba (Song: "Conga" by Gloria Estefan ) performed by JR Martinez and Karina Smirnof , Season 13, Week 5 (October 17, 2011).  I love watching Samba performed on DWTS and So You Think You Can Dance!  My first recollection of Samba style was watching old movies featuring Carmen Miranda.  Sure, sometimes she is best remembered for the fruit headdresses she used to wear, and that does stick out in my mind.  Is still cool when a performer shares the dances, food,  language, costumes from their country.  I love that America is a melting pot of many different cultures from different countries.  Costume History was one of my favorite subjects in college.  To take that one step further, it is great to step outside of your comfort zone or your native culture and enjoy and embrace something new.  I love trying foods from different countries.  I love that in America, we can sample different food tastes from all over the globe.  I always say that it would so BORING if everyone looked alike, talked alike, ate the same foods, wore the same clothes, like the same music, only 1 dance style, only had one type of food to eat.  BORING!!!  I love looking at dances from other countries and seeing the different costumes or learning to dance Spanish, Tahitian, African, whatever!  I love eating food from different countries, I don’t care if it’s Chinese, Greek, Italian, African, Japanese, Norwegian, whatever, I want to at least taste it.  I’m so fortunate I took Music Appreciation in high school, it really opened my eyes and ears to step outside of music that my family listened to (R&B, Blue, Jazz, Pop, Rock, etc.) and be able to love music from other countries, a skill you need to have if you want to belly dance.  I get lost in costuming, I can look at costume pictures for hours, I love finding out how how fashion was influenced whether by politics, war, royalty, transportation, economy, whatever.   Back in high school I was on the prom committees, so I would love picking a theme for our event.  When I sponsored Dance Workshops, I gave them different themes, like Dance the Universal Language.  I love the song Day-O by Harry Belefonte.  My favorite clip of the song was from the movie Beetlejuice.  Enjoy:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmen_Miranda
