A shout out to a Facebook buddy, Brandon Johnson, for sharing the awesome YouTube video of Farideh performing to this beautiful song by Jalaleddin Takesh in the "Belly Dancing – Images from Vancouver" movie.
Even though I started Belly Dancing back in the late 1970s, I sometimes forget how great the music was from that era. I love the music by Jalaleddin Takesh and have all of his albums on vinyl LP! The song used in the movie clip has passion, it sets the mood, it is haunting. So beautiful and moving.
I used to dance to his music a lot back in the day. I did choreographies of his songs for my dance troupe: Flower of Stone (veil for 3 dancers) and Yahlewa (cane/zill/tambourine for 3 dancers). The cool thing about the Yahlewa dance is the way song starts with a slow beledi, then ends with a faster beledi. It has both a cool vocal and instrumental section that allows each of the 3 dancers to dance solo, in a duet and in a trio:
A. Slow Entrance: Canes & Zills (All 3 enter stage, the dancer w/zills is in center)
B. Cane Duet Section:
C. Medium Section: Canes & Zills (The dancer in center joins in)
D. Fast Section: Tambourines & Zills, lets the lead dancer do a drum solo
E. Finale Section: Tambourines & Zills
I noticed some vinyl LPs for sale on eBay by Jalaleddin Takesh:
- Jalaleddin Takesh Volume I
- Jalaleddin Takesh Volume II
- Jalaleddin Takesh Volume III
- Jalaleddin Takesh Kashmira’s Fantasy
Grab them while you can. It would be awesome if there was a CD or MP3 downloads of his songs too. If anyone knows where to get them, please holler at me. Thanks.
